The world is becoming increasingly diverse.
Designers from across the globe are making their mark on a landscape increasingly shaped by the way people interact with their surroundings.
And that diversity is becoming more apparent in architecture.
The International Journal of Architecture and Design reports that the number of international architectural students in the world has increased by over a quarter since the year 2000.
The growth, while slower than the US, is not surprising.
In recent years, international students have been increasingly drawn to the design and architecture disciplines.
“It’s the most exciting thing that I have ever done,” says Alex Stucke, a senior architecture student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Stuckel is currently studying the practice of “designing a place” at the National Museum of Art in Washington, DC.
He and his fellow students are exploring a wide variety of themes, from urbanism and sustainability to the architecture of contemporary design.
“[I]f you’re interested in architecture as a whole, this is probably the most important subject you can learn about,” says Stucka.
“If you can come in and understand that you’re going to be building in a very dynamic environment and you’re getting to know the people, you will have a much greater appreciation of architecture.”
The International Architecture Biennial (IAB) is a yearly conference held in Washington DC and the first of its kind in the United States.
The conference is open to architects, designers, and students of all levels.
More than 700,000 students from around the world come to Washington DC to learn about design and design culture.
The IAB is an annual conference that takes place in Washington D.C. for more than seven days, culminating in the award-winning IAB awards ceremony.
According to IAB, there are more than 60,000 international students each year.
More than one in four international students study architecture and related disciplines.
The vast majority of them are from Asia, Europe, and the United Kingdom.
A recent study published by the International Design Center found that the global architecture industry is worth $3.4 trillion dollars.
It’s the fourth-largest industry in the US behind manufacturing and construction.
The industry employs over 13,000 people worldwide, with an estimated $8 trillion in global revenues.
In addition to the international students, a growing number of American students are pursuing careers in architecture and other related fields.
There’s a new trend among young architects who are looking to build a career outside of architecture.
They are choosing to focus on social and community building as they learn to manage the work they do.
“I’ve been working for years and years on a social and political project, and I’m not sure how I ever expected to be able to do it,” says Andrew Leong, a student at Cornell University in New York City.
Leong was one of a number of students to win the 2016 IAB International Student of the Year award for his work with a group of community organizations.
Leong was a senior fellow at the International Development Program at Cornell’s Center for Asian Studies, and he was one part of a group that created an educational website for students from Southeast Asia.
In the program, students build a website using WordPress and then host it for free to other students.
Leong says he is not looking for a career in architecture; he wants to help build a more diverse and inclusive architecture community.
He’s working with other students to help shape a more inclusive architecture environment.
“I want to show the world how important building can be and what a beautiful place architecture is,” Leong says.
What are some of the top themes that students are interested in studying?
“How to make it accessible and how to create a sense of community,” says Kyoung Choi, a junior architecture student and an IAB student.
Choi is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Council on Architecture.
Choi is studying the intersection of urban design and environmental design.
How to do a house in three minutes?
Choi says he loves the challenge of the challenge and has the desire to do more.
I want a way to make people feel connected and to show them the beauty and connection of this place, he says.
There’s another theme Choi is interested in learning about: the art of design.
“The art of architecture is really important to me, because I’m trying to think about how I can make this building better,” he says, referring to the art that is traditionally used to decorate homes.
How can students get involved?
Choi hopes that by learning more about the work that students can contribute, he can get more students involved in architecture projects.
As he prepares to begin his final semester in college next month, Choi has already started planning for the year ahead.
He plans to attend conferences and workshops to build his knowledge and connect with others.
